Google announces Android 10 (Go Edition) with Adiantum encryption support for budget smartphones

Earlier this month, Google publicly released the final version of Android 10 to the masses, which has now rolled out to several devices, including the Essential Phone, the Redmi K20 Pro, and the OnePlus 7/7 Pro. Additionally, many other devices have been confirmed to come with Google’s newest software out of the box, including the Huawei Mate 30/Mate 30 Pro, the OnePlus 7T series, and more. It’s set to come pre-installed in most 2020 devices, and of course, this includes entry-level smartphones. Google’s Android Go edition has helped to optimize budget devices greatly, and Google has now announced the latest version of Android Go, Android 10 (Go edition).

As you may expect, it brings Android 10 and all of its newest features to these low-end Android Go phones, with additional optimizations to match. This means that features like system-wide dark mode, screen gestures, and more will also be available for these phones. We also have several optimizations to keep things as smooth as they can be, including speed improvements, with apps in Android 10 (Go edition) now launching up to 10% faster than on Android Pie. The biggest improvement, though, is the fact that the newest version of Android now supports Adiantum encryption.

Adiantum encryption is a new form of encryption geared with low-end devices in mind. It’s built to run efficiently without specialized hardware, so entry-level devices can be efficiently secured just like higher-end phones without having a negative impact on the device’s performance. Android Go devices, which normally have less than 2 GB of RAM and around 8/16 GB of storage, will benefit greatly from Adiantum.

Android 10 (Go edition) will come pre-installed on Android Go devices launching from 2020 onwards, and it will also be rolled out to certain devices, like those from Nokia. Android Go custom ROMs are also a thing, and if you have a low-end device, there is a chance you might be able to try one out down the road.
